Experiments in Soluability

Posted by Danny Bu |

A few days after science camp at Wizkidz Logan was conducting science experiments with everything he could find. So I decided to help. The first jar has salt, the second sugar, the third coffee grinds and the fourth potting soil.

Stepping over to the Dark Side

Posted by Danny Bu |

For all you stalwarts who refuse to join Facebook here are the photos to prove that yes the Bu Family is willing to experience any culture at least once.

Born and bred in the concrete jungle of NYC, rural culture was more foreign to me than a sojourn through the mean streets of Kandahar. I will admit this was a ton of fun and we met some people who I greatly respect, admire and I am glad to call friends.

Walk up and hug these people! Now.

None of us have a ton of money right now but folks who care have stepped up and made donations to sponsor the fight against cancer. I want to give special thanks to the following folks. Because of you I hit my goal in Relay For Life. Thank you so much for caring.

Why ... Because Cancer Sucks. That's Why.

Posted by Danny Bu |

I just got a message from a former co-worker on Facebook. It was two words that shook me to the core. She said "Cancer sucks." That shook me to the core. I don't know the details of her personal story of cancer but all of us have one. In the past few years so many people I know have had to battle this disease:

  • Leslie - passed away from brain Cancer

  • Cheryl & Tammy - passed away from breast cancer

  • Amber - passed away from sinus cancer

  • My dad - battled prostate cancer

  • And now this.

I work for an organization who every day does everything they can to not only find a cure but to help all those who battle every day, with every breath to kepp cancer at bay and continue enjoying the gift of life.

Every year I ask all my friends and family to support the American Cancer Society by making a small donation to continue our lifesaving work and with this difficult economy I debated whether or not to ask again. But when I saw the words "Cancer sucks" I knew that it is worth it to ask.

So skip that latte for one day, bring lunch from home for one day or skip that movie rental.

Please make a donation to Relay For Life by clicking the link below. I know we can't afford to give much but if you can't spare $25 just consider $5 a month for 5 months it goes a long way to helping those with cancer and their loved ones to fight back against this awful disease.

Monopoly as a Teaching Tool

Posted by Danny Bu |

Today my almost 4 year old found the Monopoly box in a closet and instantly said,

"Daddy, what's that game?"
I said, "Monopoly."
He said, "Can we play."
And with a bit of hesitation I said "OK."

I mean, after all how do you play a game that simulates the complexities of real estate market with a four year old?

The results were surprising. He quickly caught the concept of rolling the dice and counting the dots and enthusiastically moving his little pewter car around by counting the spaces. Soon his mom showed him how he could buy a house for $1 each. He proudly counted the three paper singles in his hand and bought himself some homes.

Granted he wasn't really playing Monopoly but in the course of a short while he was learning how to count, how to count money, how to take turns and after awhile he was even trying to read the names of the spaces he landed on.

One of my axioms in life is "Communicate for results." People respond to different types of communication in different ways. Some folks respond better when you e-mail, some when you call, some when you send them an Excel document, some respond best to Twitter or IM or whatever. The deal is always adjust your method of communication in order to achieve the desired result even when it may not be your favorite mode of communication.

My son learns well with Monopoly. So I can assure you that next time I want to teach him math or reading or real estate investing I won't pull out a text book but I will pull out Monopoly.
